Children of the Confederacy
June 2017 Convention

Saturday morning, June 10th, 2017 - the CofC members, with adults, gathered at the gravesite of Captain Leopold Caspari, located in the historic American Cemetery in Natchitoches. The history of the cemetery was read as well as the Military Record of Captain Caspari. Then members took turns reading about some of the 40 Confederate Veterans buried in the Cemetery, then the youngest CofC member placed the Battle Flag in the wreath at Captain Caspari's grave.

A most informative tour and historical background of the Minor Basilica of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church was conducted by Church Docent, Ms. Adele Scott. The church founded in 1717, was where Father Discharry left as Chaplain with Confederate Volunteers in April of 1861. Following a European custom, he was buried within the church with a marble floor slab marking the gravesite.

Grand Ecore Museum and Visitors Center was the next stop, located a few miles north of Natchitoches. The name - Grand Ecore - is French, meaning "great bluff". Members and Museum employee enjoy the view of the Red River from the 80 foot "great bluff" at the Overlook. Several members were taken on the 1/4 mile hike to see the Confederate Trenches used by the soldiers to ship food and supplies.

Back at the hotel, members met Mr. Don Brown, Representative of the International Lions Club. On behalf of the Natchitoches Lions Club, he gladly accepted 89 pair of glasses - Isabella’s President Project for the year.

Presentation of the Louisiana CofC Scrapbook by Division Historian, Remington Miller. Isabella will be taking the scrapbook to the CofC General Convention shortly in Montgomery, Alabama.

Members Gabriel, Bella, Isabella, Finley, Remington and Nicholas visited with Mr. Brown and learned how the organization helps those who cannot afford needed glasses.
